Anger and aggression are prevalent problems among people with developmental disabilities and constitute primary reasons for them to be admitted and re-admitted to institutions. They are also a key reason for the prescribing of behaviour control and anti-psychotic medication to this client group. Stimulated by growing research in this area, mental health and criminal justice professionals have begun to see the benefits of anger assessment and cognitive-behavioural anger treatment for people with developmental disabilities.

There is no prior text to guide anger treatment provision to this client group.  This text presents a manual-guided cognitive-behavioural anger treatment protocol, grounded in a solid theoretical framework and empirical evidence for its efficacy in clinical practice.  The assessment and treatment approach is designed to engage and motivate patients with recurrent and deep-rooted anger problems and their manifestation in serious aggressive behaviour.  Accompanying the treatment protocol are a number of worksheets, handouts, and exercise sheets for clinicians and clients that can be accessed online.

"Taylor's manual is probably the best treatment manual on the market for working with adults with cognitive impairments and anger issues. The field for these manual is certainly limited, as not enough research has been done on CBT with people with cognitive impiarments. Taylor's approach is emperically solid and backed by his own research and experience completing individual and group therapy with adults with mild and moderate intellectual impairments. One caution in this text is don't let the language differences with the UK confuse you. The langauge for the UK is "learning disabled" but for the United States this would be cognitively impaired, as we use learning disability to mean something else. The first portion of the manual covers background research on anger, aggression in people with cognitive impairments and assessment. The major chunk of the manual is a step-by-step guide to implementation of the CBT program. Do not be skeptical that CBT will work with this population, as I have personally used this manual in both a group and individual framework with clients with moderate inetllectual impairments and found that they were able to grasp the CBT framework and responded very well to the program. The best feature of the manual is it methodical and repetitive nature, as well the inclusion of many reproducible handouts and guides. I would highly recommend this manual for practioners working with this challenging population, as anger and aggresive behavior are often central issues plaguing people with intellectual deficits. My one compalint, would be that this manual is not really highly adaptable for people with moderate to signficant communication impairments or differences (e.g. PDD), likely because of the lack of a visually based component to the treatment."
